I loved Lviv. Even getting there is still an adventure; it's one of the few places in Europe now that one is awoken on the train in the middle of the night by border guards with Alsatian dogs searching through your bags and suitcases. That world has all but disappeared from Europe now.

Once there, visit the House of Science. It's unbelievable. Walk around. Poke your nose into places. Speak to people. Learn some Ukrainian. Its an amazing place. Imagine Venice left to rot with no investment. The ruins of the Hapsburg Empire. The boundary between East and West. Russia and Europe. A parliament that has fist fights instead of debates. Town squares where the elite of Europe used to promenade when it was known as the 'Paris of the East' - you can still (just about) see why.

It's Europe. It's our long lost cousin. But it's different. Its isolation has led it down strange paths.
